Oyster Gardening Equipment

Oyster gardening can be done with a wide range of equipment and materials, much like other types of gardening hobbies. State-sponsored  gardening programs typically use lower cost square metal baskets that look similar to crab traps. Metal cages typically cost less than plastic cages but do not last as long. A high-end growing approach employs   commercial-grade plastic oyster cages; the same type as used by BaySave. They are more expensive but we believe they offer a better value for oyster gardeners. The cases are designed to maximize water flow and nutrient exposure around each oyster while minimizing clogging due to algae.

Each of these 25" cages are made of durable plastic that can hold hundreds of growing oysters and can be expected to provide years of trouble-free use. Unlike metal cages, these are not affected by salt water. The cages are typically hung from docks as illustrated below but many other types of installations are possible.

Cages are available with two sizes of mesh - 1/4" and 1/2" that seem to be the best sizes for home growers. They are easily strung with regular 3/8" dock line (not included).

The cages are available to oyster gardeners anywhere in the continental U.S. at a price of $60 each that includes delivery. Orders are being taken now for late spring delivery.

To order cages, send an e-mail to tnovak@baysave.org with your contact information (including physical delivery address), the mesh size desired and e-mail address for response of an invoice via PayPal. Payment can be made by mail or online by bank card, credit card or electronic check through PayPal. Due to limited supply, orders will be accepted and confirmed on a first-come basis. If you do not receive a confirmation via e-mail then we did not process your order.

Oyster gardening is intended for environmental restoration purposes only and not for human consumption due to agricultural and shellfish regulations. The cages are sold by Tony Novak and not by BaySave Corporation due to tax regulations.
